Amports Joins Chesapeake Bay Foundation Oyster Restoration Effort at Baltimore Atlantic Terminal
Supporting a Healthier Chesapeake Bay Through Environmental Stewardship and Community Partnership
Environmental stewardship is an important part of being a responsible port operator, and Amports is proud to expand its commitment to the Chesapeake Bay through participation in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Oyster Gardening Program at our Atlantic Terminal in Baltimore.
While the oyster restoration program has been operating successfully throughout the Port of Baltimore for several years, September 2026 marked the beginning of Amports’ participation in the effort through a partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and other members of the local maritime community.
As the port authority at the Atlantic Terminal, Amports owns and manages the berth and is responsible for the surrounding waterfront and waters. This unique role provides an opportunity to do more than facilitate cargo operations. It allows us to actively contribute to the health of the waterways that support our business, our customers, and the surrounding Baltimore community.
Beginning this fall, members of the Amports safety team will participate in monthly oyster gardening activities at the terminal. Oyster cages containing young oysters, known as “spat,” will be maintained and monitored through May 2027. At the conclusion of the growing season, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will collect the mature oysters and relocate them to designated restoration sites in the Patapsco River, where they will help improve water quality and strengthen the local ecosystem.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s oyster restoration program focuses on rebuilding native oyster populations throughout the region. Oyster reefs are formed when free-floating oyster larvae settle and attach to hard surfaces such as shells, rocks, piers, and other structures. Over time, these oysters grow into complex three-dimensional reefs that become the foundation of vibrant underwater ecosystems.
The benefits extend far beyond the oysters themselves. Adult oysters naturally filter algae, sediment, and other pollutants from surrounding waters, helping improve water clarity and overall water quality. At the same time, oyster reefs provide critical habitat for fish, crabs, and numerous other marine species. These reefs support entire underwater communities by offering shelter, feeding grounds, and breeding habitat that contribute to the biodiversity and resilience of the Chesapeake Bay.
Amports is joining a broader environmental effort that includes organizations such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance, a coalition of more than 50 partners working to accelerate oyster restoration and recovery throughout the Bay. By participating in the Oyster Gardening Program, Amports is contributing to a collaborative initiative focused on one of the Chesapeake Bay’s most important natural resources.
