Floating Wetlands: An Ongoing Investment in Chesapeake Bay Stewardship

Operational performance with responsible stewardship.

At AMPORTS, we recognize the importance of protecting our natural resources while delivering operational excellence. The photos in this article highlight one of our initiatives in Baltimore, MD—the use of floating wetlands within our stormwater retention ponds.

These wetlands are designed to naturally filter and improve the quality of stormwater before it enters the Chesapeake Bay. By increasing the volume of water that undergoes filtration, they help capture pollutants, support biodiversity, and contribute to healthier aquatic ecosystems.

Our retention ponds in Baltimore serve as more than just infrastructure for stormwater management. They are vital to our broader commitment to environmental responsibility, ensuring that our operations minimize their impact on the communities and ecosystems around us.

The floating wetlands function by using vegetation and root systems to absorb excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, while also trapping sediments and other pollutants suspended in the water. This natural filtration process not only improves water clarity but also reduces the risk of harmful algal blooms, creating a more balanced and sustainable aquatic environment.

This initiative reflects AMPORTS’ mission and core principles: to balance operational performance with responsible stewardship. We are proud to align these efforts with the Green Marine program, continuously seeking opportunities to strengthen our sustainability practices.

Through projects like these, AMPORTS reaffirms its dedication to reducing environmental impacts and protecting the waterways that connect our operations to the world.
